Hotel Caribe is a theme-park hotel, not a beach resort, and it works best read that way. It's one of six hotels PortAventura owns on its own resort estate near Salou, and the entry tier of the six: PortAventura grades its hotels Essential, Comfort, Premium and Exclusive, and Caribe is an Essential. It does a handful of things well: unlimited access to PortAventura Park in the room rate, an unusual sand-bottomed pool right outside the rooms, Caribbean theming across 14 island buildings and a price that usually undercuts the resort's other hotels. Guests rate the white sand pool, the breakfast and the quiet position highly.
The gaps are the ones a beach-resort family notices. There's no all-inclusive option here and no drinks are included with any board, so the bill grows as you eat and drink your way through the week. There's no kids' club or crèche, only an evening entertainment programme, so you look after young children yourselves. The hotel isn't on the beach, and it's the furthest of the six hotels from the park gate, a walk one first-hand family put at about 15 minutes. Its TripAdvisor score sits lower than Salou's dedicated family hotels, which reflects families arriving expecting a beach all-inclusive rather than a theme-park hotel.

The one piece of geography to understand before you book is where Caribe sits relative to the park. It's the furthest of PortAventura's six hotels from the main PortAventura Park entrance. The others reach the gate directly through the park's themed areas; Caribe doesn't. The official site doesn't give a walking time, and one first-hand family put the walk to the entrance at about 15 minutes. That distance is also why the hotel is quiet in the evenings, which families count as a plus. Some booking sites mention a free shuttle bus between the hotels and the park, though it isn't among the hotel's listed services and first-hand accounts describe walking. Plan to walk, and check with the hotel directly if you need an alternative.
Around the estate itself and inside the parks, prams and pushchairs are fine, though some rides ask you to store the pushchair while you ride. The 14 buildings are low-rise, and there are ground-floor Standard rooms if stairs are a worry. The hotel runs the usual services: free Wi-Fi, 24-hour reception, currency exchange, drinks vending machines and a meeting room, with luggage storage, an internet centre and laundry each at an extra charge. OK Mobility car hire has a desk on site. PortAventura World also has an official app that covers ride wait times, show schedules and restaurant table bookings.
Board basis, and every restaurant and bar
The three board options, the one main buffet, the paid à la carte and the two bars.
The board comes in three levels and there's no all-inclusive here. Bed and breakfast covers breakfast only. Half board adds the evening buffet. Full board adds the evening buffet plus a voucher to spend on lunch at PortAventura Park's food outlets, which is the option that keeps you in the park all day without a trip back to the hotel. Drinks aren't included with any board, and buying them through the week is the single thing families expecting an all-inclusive most often flag. The full-board lunch voucher is a set allowance per adult and per child to spend at the park's food counters, and the amount can differ between the PortAventura hotels rather than being one fixed figure across the resort. The operator sets it and can change it, so check the current value when you book.
Everyday eating happens at Buffet Bohío, the one main buffet included with half and full board. Breakfast is the high point in family accounts, with full English, continental and Spanish options, and there are children's staples like pizza, nuggets and chips at every meal, with desserts well liked. The evening mains are the weaker part in reviews, described as repetitive rather than varied over a longer stay. The other restaurants are table service at an extra charge, unless you're in a Club San Juan room: Coral Reef for à la carte Italian and Mediterranean, and Puerto Viejo for tapas, both needing a booking. Club San Juan itself is a buffet-and-table restaurant kept for guests in that room tier. La Bodeguita Del Medio is a table-service terrace over the hotel lake for drinks, sandwiches, soft drinks and coffees, and Salsa Café is a summer-only snack bar. The resort flags vegan, vegetarian and allergy options across its restaurants, and has an allergens section on its site.
For drinks in the evening there are two bars: El Tinglado, a pirate-ship-themed evening bar, and Mango Bongo by the pool, which opens in the summer season only.

How restaurant booking works
Bohío takes half and full-board guests without a booking; it's the paid à la carte rooms, Coral Reef and Puerto Viejo, that need a reservation, made before noon for lunch and before 6pm for dinner, subject to availability. On full board you also have the park restaurants at lunchtime through the voucher, from quick-service counters to sit-down meals across PortAventura Park, Caribe Aquatic Park and Ferrari Land.
The pools, and the white sand pool
The signature sand pool, every other pool, the rooms and where the actual beach is.
The signature feature is the white sand pool: a pool with a sand-bottomed shallow end fringed with white sand, which the hotel describes as one of Europe's largest white sand swimming pools. In practice it means small children can wade in the shallows and build sandcastles in the same spot, right outside the rooms, which is what families single it out for. Alongside it there's a separate children's pool and an adult pool, both open to all guests. For a toddler, the sandy shallow end is the surest place to stand and paddle. Two more pools are kept for Club San Juan Deluxe Superior guests: a private pool in their garden enclosure and a heated indoor pool.
One date matters for all of them. Every pool, indoor and outdoor, is open May to September only, so outside that window there's no pool swimming at the hotel at all. Families also report a few poolside habits worth knowing: lifeguards are strict, inflatables including balls aren't allowed and sunglasses need a strap. Pool towels cost extra rather than being free to take, so check the charge at check-in.
Beyond the hotel pools, Caribe Aquatic Park is a separate Caribbean-themed water park on the estate, with family and kids' slides, bigger thrill slides, a lazy river, a wave pool and indoor and outdoor pools. Hotel guests buy discounted tickets for it rather than it being included, and it's covered with the parks further down. Height limits on its slides can rule out the youngest children, so it suits the family more once children are past the toddler stage.
The rooms, every type
The hotel has two room tiers, Standard and Club San Juan Deluxe Superior, and within Standard there's a larger two-bedroom family room. The table below is the full line-up with the official sizes; the guidance after it is which suit a family with a baby or toddler. Cots are free on request, subject to availability, so ask when you book.

For a family the choice is straightforward. The base Standard Room from 24 m² sleeps up to four and is the everyday room, in 13 of the 14 buildings; first-hand accounts call the rooms basic, comfortable and small, with balconies over the pool a plus, a bathroom with a bath and shower, a low-powered hairdryer and a TV carrying English channels including Disney Channel. If you need more space or you're a larger group, the 2-bedroom family Standard from 40 m² sleeps up to eight and gives you a door to close on a sleeping child, still at the Standard price rather than an upgrade tier. The Club San Juan Deluxe Superior from 32 m² is the step up: a private palm-garden enclosure with its own pool and restaurant, and a free Express pass covered in the parks section. Note that a child on the standard rooms often sleeps on the fold-up sofa bed, which suits younger children better than older ones.
What Club San Juan adds
Club San Juan Deluxe Superior is the hotel's only tier above Standard. On top of the room it brings the private palm-garden enclosure, an exclusive Club San Juan pool and restaurant, and a free Express 10 pass per person for PortAventura Park, which fast-tracks ten of the main rides across two consecutive days; in some seasons that becomes a split Express 5 and Express 5, so check the current terms. It also opens access to Hotel PortAventura's Wellness Center for over-16s by advance booking, along with a gym, sauna and the heated indoor pool, all running May to September. For a family with little ones the pull is the quieter private pool and skipping the ride queues, rather than the adult wellness side.
The beach, and getting to Salou
Hotel Caribe isn't a beachfront hotel, and the white sand pool is as close as it comes to a beach on site. The nearest real beach is the Salou seafront, Platja de Llevant, also signed as Playa de Salou. Operators quote the walk at around 20 minutes; one first-hand family found it closer to 40 with a young child in tow, so most families staying here take a taxi into town for the sand. Salou has wide sandy beaches, and two of them, Platja de Llevant and Platja dels Capellans, hold Blue Flag status, the award for beaches that meet set water-quality and facilities standards.
Babies and toddlers
What's set up for the youngest, the parks that suit them and the days out beyond the estate.
A family with a baby or toddler should know what isn't here. There's no kids' club and no crèche, and no structured care with set ages, hours or staff ratios. What the hotel lists is an evening entertainment programme and a games area, so you look after young children yourselves through the day. The evening programme is light animation, with first-hand accounts describing a mini disco and shows featuring Woody Woodpecker, the cartoon woodpecker who turns up in the hotel's evening entertainment and in the park's Far West area. He isn't a Sesame Street character, which matters only because the Sesame Street world in the park, covered below, is a different draw with its own characters.
On the practical baby kit, it's worth asking about a high chair when you book, along with a baby bath, steriliser or monitor, since the hotel doesn't list them among its services. For an evening out, ask the hotel directly about babysitting. For swimming, the children's pool and the shallow sandy end of the white sand pool are where the youngest will be happiest, since the big park rides and the water-park slides have height limits that keep small children off them.
The nearest pharmacy and supermarket are in Salou town, a short taxi ride or the walk into town, and there's a free medical service inside the parks during opening hours, with a 24-hour emergency service also available at an extra charge.
Three parks, one includedThe parks and things to do
PortAventura Park is the one folded into your room rate, with unlimited access: six themed worlds and around 40 attractions. For under-5s the draw is SésamoAventura, the Sesame Street world, with age-appropriate rides and character meets featuring Elmo, Ernie, Bert, Grover and Cookie Monster. There are daily shows and a parade for all ages. The major thrill rides, Dragon Khan, Shambhala, Furius Baco and ULUM, carry height and age limits that keep young children off, so the Sesame Street world is the key zone for the littlest visitors.
Ferrari Land is included for one day, subject to the opening calendar. It's an Italy-and-Ferrari-themed park of 16 rides with a junior area for young children, a stunt show and a museum, though its main attractions lean towards older children and adults. Caribe Aquatic Park, the water park introduced with the pools above, is the third park, on discounted tickets rather than included. An Express Pass, which fast-tracks the main rides, isn't included for Standard guests but can be bought separately, and Club San Juan guests get one as part of their tier. There's also a separate public water park, Aquopolis La Pineda, a short drive away, which isn't part of PortAventura World and isn't discounted for hotel guests.
The area and days out
The hotel sits between Salou and Cambrils on the Costa Dorada. Salou is the nearest resort town, a walk of around 20 to 40 minutes or a short taxi, with a long promenade, sandy beaches, shops, restaurants and amusements. Cambrils, about 6 miles (10 km) south and 10 to 15 minutes by car or taxi, is a quieter, more upmarket town with a seafood harbour and a calmer beach. Tarragona, about 6 miles (10 km) north and 15 to 20 minutes by car or local train, is a Roman UNESCO World Heritage site with an amphitheatre, an aqueduct and an archaeological museum.
Barcelona is about 62 miles (100 km) away, roughly an hour to 90 minutes by road or about 90 minutes by train from Salou. It makes a full-day trip rather than an easy outing, and the distance makes it a hard day with a baby or a very young toddler, so it suits families with older children better.

Hotel Caribe rates around 3 out of 5 on TripAdvisor from roughly 3,300 reviews, ranked 71st of the 91 hotels listed in Salou. Booking.com and Google list it too if you want a second opinion to weigh alongside. That lower score reflects families arriving expecting a beach all-inclusive and finding a theme-park hotel, not any concern about safety or cleanliness.

Within PortAventura's own hotels, the closest call is against Hotel El Paso, the resort's only all-inclusive and its other entry-tier option, about 10 minutes' walk from the park and without Caribe's signature pool. For families who want all-inclusive convenience, El Paso is the stronger pick; for the pool and eating in the park, Caribe. Above them sit Hotel PortAventura and Gold River in the Comfort tier, with direct park-gate access at a higher price, then Colorado Creek in Premium and the five-star Mansión de Lucy in the Exclusive tier.
Against Salou's standalone family resorts, such as H10 Mediterranean Village, Golden Avenida Family Suites, Blaumar and Best Cap Salou, those tend to rate higher and come with more dedicated family facilities like structured kids' clubs and animation teams. Hotel Caribe wins on the things they can't offer, on-site theme-park access, the immersive theming and the sand pool, rather than on overall resort quality. If a beach-and-kids-club week is what you're after, one of those may suit better; if the parks are the trip, Caribe is built around them.
The journey in and the best monthsGetting there and when to go
The nearest airport is Reus, about 7 miles (12 km) away and a 15 to 20 minute transfer, served by Ryanair, Jet2 and other budget carriers from UK airports in summer. The alternative is Barcelona El Prat, about 62 miles (100 km) away, roughly an hour to 90 minutes by car, or the high-speed train from Barcelona Sants to Camp de Tarragona in around 30 to 35 minutes and then a taxi; more flights, longer transfer. PortAventura World sells hotel packages that include coach transfers from Reus or Barcelona, but an airport transfer has to be pre-arranged and pre-booked rather than coming automatically with the room. If you're driving, road access is good via the A-7 and AP-7 past Tarragona, and there's free on-site parking, subject to availability, with no need to pre-book.
PortAventura World runs across seasonal events through the year, with summer 2026 dated 27 June to 5 September, and the hotel is open when the resort is, though its pools run May to September only. July and August are the peak: hottest, busiest and priciest, and intense in full sun for babies and toddlers, with mornings and evenings the comfortable stretch. Late June and September bring good weather with lighter crowds, and Easter is popular too. With a baby or toddler, May, early June and September are the more comfortable weeks, with the pools open and the heat below the July peak. Outside the pool season the parks still run their Halloween and Christmas events, but the hotel pools and Caribe Aquatic Park are closed.
Weather
The hotel shares the coastal climate of Salou and Tarragona, so the figures below cover it well. The warm, swimmable window runs roughly June to September, with the sea warmest from July into September and the peak heat, crowds and prices in July and August. May and September are the cooler shoulder months, with the pools open. From October the outdoor pools have closed, so a later trip is about the parks rather than swimming.

Which board option makes sense for park days?
If you plan to spend whole days in the parks, full board is the one that saves the back-and-forth: it adds a voucher to spend on lunch at the park restaurants on top of the evening buffet. Half board sends you back to the hotel for lunch or paying in the park, and bed and breakfast leaves both lunch and dinner to sort yourselves. Drinks sit outside all three, so budget for those whichever you pick.
Is there a shuttle to the park, or do we walk?
You walk. The hotel doesn't publish a time, and one first-hand family put it at about 15 minutes to the park gate. A few booking sites mention a free shuttle between the hotels, though the hotel doesn't list one among its services, so don't count on it without checking directly.
Is there a kids’ club we can leave the children at?
No. There's a light evening entertainment programme but no crèche or drop-off club with set ages and hours, so days are hands-on with young children. If you want structured childcare, some of Salou's standalone family resorts run a kids' club and Hotel Caribe doesn't.
Can we walk to the beach with a pushchair?
You can, but the seafront is a walk of roughly 20 to 40 minutes and the hotel has no beach of its own, so most families take a taxi in with a pushchair rather than walking. Allow for those fares if beach mornings are part of the plan.
