Sources and accuracy
Where our photos, weather figures and facts come from, how we check them, and what to do if you spot something that looks off.
We want you to trust what you read here, so it's only fair to be open about where it all comes from. Here's how we source the three things that matter most: the photos, the weather, and the facts.
Photos
The images on this site come from a mix of places, and we pick each one to show you what somewhere is really like.
- Free photo libraries. Sites like Pexels and Pixabay let photographers share their work for anyone to use. We go through them by hand and choose shots that really match the place, rather than grabbing the first sunny beach we find.
- Paid photography packs. For some places we buy professional photography, so we can show you a proper view instead of making do.
- Official photos. Resorts, parks and tourism boards publish their own pictures of rooms, pools and attractions. Where those are the clearest way to show you a specific room type or feature, we use them.
- Our own photos. When we've been somewhere ourselves, the pictures are ours, taken on the trip.
We won't pass off a photo of one place as another. If we can't find a real picture of the exact spot, we'll use one that's typical of the area and the caption will say so, rather than pretend it's the specific hotel or beach.
Weather and sea temperatures
Our weather figures come from real weather stations, not a computer's best guess. This matters more than it sounds.
The daytime highs, overnight lows and rainfall are measured readings from weather stations near each place, mostly from the same official records the national met services use. We work them out as averages over the last few decades, so a month's figures reflect what's normal rather than one odd year.
Sea temperatures come from a NASA and NOAA satellite record that has tracked the world's oceans since the 1980s. It's the closest thing to a thermometer in the water off each resort.
We chose this route on purpose. A lot of weather tables online are produced by computer models that smooth everything into a grid, which can quietly get a coastal resort's summer several degrees wrong. Measured station data is harder to pull together, but it's the number that's actually measured.
Facts and figures
For the details that help you plan, like room sizes, children's club ages, board options and opening dates, we go to the official source first, which usually means the hotel or park's own website. If we can't confirm something from a proper source, we leave it out rather than guess.
We read a lot of guest reviews too, but we use them for opinion and mood, not for facts. A review is great for telling you whether families found the buffet stressful at breakfast. It's not where we'd take a room size from.
Every place is labelled either first-hand, meaning we've stayed there, or researched, meaning we've pulled together everything we could find. It's a small honesty flag so you always know which one you're reading.
Keeping it accurate
We check our facts carefully and we keep an eye on things as they change. Even so, hotels rework their rooms, clubs change their ages and prices move, so something here will eventually fall out of date.
If you spot anything that looks wrong, or you've been somewhere recently and found it different to how we've described it, please tell us. It helps a lot, and it makes the site better for the next family. Email us at [email protected] and we'll look into it.
